Part One
Paterson, Katherine. Bridge to Terabithia. Harper, 2017.
Suggested Grade Levels: 4-7
Genre: Children's Literature
Part Two
Initially I had only heard of this book and seen the previews for the movie as a child. The only background information I knew about the book was it involved fantasy and imaginary creatures. I predicted that the setting was going to be different. I thought the whole book was going to take place in a fantasy land instead of the fantasy land being apart of the two character's imagination. After reading the book it quickly became one of my favorite children's book I've read from the list so far. It combined reality and fantasy nicely. It included real life socioeconomic problems of children from broken homes that readers can relate to and provided an escape to a dreamland. Before reading this book in a classroom, I would tell students to be cautious that the book includes sensitive topics such as death.
Part Three
I believe that at least one of the varying characters and their different situations can relate to younger readers. Readers might have experienced bullying, the struggle of being accepted, a broken family, or even death of a loved one and can find comfort in the characters. In my opinion I don't think this book should be banned. I don't think this book was meant to provoke spiteful messages to the readers but instead helps them come to the conclusion that you can make light out of a bad situation.
